Ignorance is no excuse

What’s a topic or issue about which you’ve changed your mind?

There used to be a certain patience towards ignorance. A kind of leniency towards stupidity. “Well, they don’t know better,” used to be a valid caveat.

Now, no more.

What has become terribly evident is that humans need to be wise to survive.

The stark reality is:

Stupidity and ignorance are equal to viciousness and malice, given their outcome. Abject ignorance is a serious health hazard, and idiocy is a danger to us all.

Added to that:

Intelligence is not enough, either. Empathy paired with intelligence is what is needed to keep the species alive and thriving.

You’re smart, fine. But are you wise?

Can you heal a broken heart? Can you nourish a soul? Have you grown within?  Are you aware of yourself and others? Are you capable of generosity? Do you listen to understand? Have you matured enough to comprehend love?

The hard truth is:

Wisdom is not a perk of life. It is a requirement to survive and thrive.

you do you

Which aspects do you think makes a person unique?

There is something magical about a person who, despite all attempts to stop them, stays true to who they really are.

toxic

Corridor, Windows, Dark & Light

I remember this anger
the slow-simmering boil
clenched tight just above the gut
that sleepless certainty of knowing
you have been wronged
on every scale.

‘Stupid is as stupid does’
But I’m no Forrest
I can see the trees for what they are
the beginning of a long Heart of Darkness
where everything is warped
and wrong and upside down
because even the mood is toxic

and suddenly I can trace the battle scars
fading into the foreground
like that tattoo you forgot about
or those combat boots out back
grown dusty in the shed
the ones that helped you cross
that violent overgrown desert.

And now it’s time
time to take down the gas-mask
and strap on the worn leather
find your trusted binoculars
the ones without the fancy bits
but excellent night vision
now it is time to get out the maps
the combat notes, the exit strategies
and scout almost-forgotten terrain

because you know this is no joke.
this is as real as it gets
this is the old and known
enemy.

thus, written:

Zeph, my friend
you would know
of the greatness in open spaces
green and bright

between the words
and whispers
that moment, after dark
the hesitation
the palpitations
rising with the hand to light

hoping for beauty
to come true in impending dreams
that vast tenderness
that antithesis of night
