A former boss told me the truth about a possible career, the realities of taking that path, and the various consequences it involved.
They gained nothing from this, but they did it anyway.
This honesty allowed me to make a genuinely informed decision, which in hindsight probably saved my life.

Manager [grudgingly]: Yes.
Warhorse [interested]: Can you fire them?
Manager [annoyed]: No.
Warhorse [impressed]: They won’t show up.
Manager [exasperated]: Why?
Warhorse [wistful]: Because they have achieved perfection.
